Accessorize your Barn Home With a Fabulous Barn Door!
Think about this: every home needs doors, whether they’re interior or exterior. However doors are seldom considered a ‘home fashion accessory’. I believe that thinking to be rather short-sighted! Let’s face it, the average home has almost as many doors in it as it does windows; sometimes more. But do we agonize over them the way we do so many other aspects of our home? Truth be told; not as often as we should. A door is a way of getting from here to there, right? Nothing could be farther from the truth!
These rustic barn doors make a definite statement about the taste of the homeowner.
The style of door we choose makes a statement about us and what we might (or might not) wish to reveal to the outside world. It will also give clues as to what colors and textures we like. I visited Iceland where there is very little wood available and homes are built mostly from masonry materials. Their front door s on the other hand are wood and lavish in design!
I, too, have visited Iceland and recall the beautiful wood doors; many of them in the barn door style. That’s the beauty of barn doors, they fit in anywhere with every type of architecture!
Hi, I am renovating a home in New Orleans that has existing exterior barn doors. The installation of the doors has lead to some problems that I would like to try and alleviate. When the doors are closed there are gaps around all the edges and the elements have been allowed to enter into the home. Is there a sound solution to weatherproofing barn doors? One thought that I have had was to cut the doors like a trapezoid to fit inside of the door frame cut to accept the trapezoid door shape snugly and mount the door on telescoping rods that connect to the wheels. What do you think?

I’m not sure about weatherproofing original barn doors as I’ve always delt with reproduction barn doors. I do have an idea, though, on where you might go for help. Try Barn Interiors (www.barninteriors.com) as they sell barn doors and all sorts of spcialty barn door hardware specific to old barn doors. They should be able to point you toward what you need.
